A Fine Mess

"Mom, when are we going to take down that wallpaper?" "Mom, I want to paint my room!" "Mom, this is the color I want for my room. When can we paint?"

"We'll take it down over spring break," I said.

Now it's spring break, so we have begun to process of taking down the wallpaper in Kirsten's bedroom. I thought I'd rent a steamer, and probably should have, but instead I bought a little perforator and a packet of glue-dissolving chemical. The process isn't too bad and in doing so I'm getting a good workout. :)

The walls upstairs are all plastered with a patterned finish. When we moved into this house I wanted to wallpaper the nursery so we evened the finish with wallboard compound. In removing the stuff, I'm finding that with some scrubbing the compound is coming off and we may be able to restore the finish to its original state, or close to it. That puts painting day further off into the future, but I think in the long run we'll be happier, at least I will be and I'll be in this house longer than Kirsten will (I think). :D

So for today, more scrubbing is on the agenda as well as softball practice and grocery shopping, in addition to the usual stuff.

And a fine mess it is. Wallpaper and painting is one of my favorite hobbies. Taking down an old job is not the fun part. I am sure you will perservere and it will be just wonderful. Keep up the good work.

The only fun part about taking wallpaper down is if it peels off in sheets (doesn't happen too often, unfortunately!). Good luck - I'm sure you'll be glad in the end!

"If a job's worth doing, it's worth doing well". Good luck with it all.
