January Blahs

I'm just not in the mood for much of anything these days. I've always said that January is the one month of the year that I would love to escape from every year. Today's freezing foggy day isn't helping matters either. So I haven't touched any stitching for weeks now, can't seem to focus on any one thing for very long.

There have been a few little projects that have taken up some of my time. I have these three Grady gowns ready to take to smocking guild tonight. There are three more in my project box in various stages of readiness, and in a purge of my fabrics I found some cottons that would be appropriate to make more from. Our guild hasn't been producing nearly enough of these gowns for the NICU the last few years and we really should make that a priority for this year.

For awhile now I've been frustrated with the paper that seems to come at me from everywhere and ends up in piles and overflowing the cute little basket organizer I had in the kitchen. The basket wasn't quite wide enough, so paper didn't fit quite right - but it was a convenient spot. Last night I decided to take a Costco milk box (I have an unending supply of these!), cut off the top flaps, and tore strips from a bunch of fat quarters I had. I used Mod Podge to glue them down and seal them. This is the result - after pitching a bunch of old papers and organizing some of the leftovers into file folders. In the past I've used contact paper to cover cardboard and have been pleased with the resulting inexpensive container, but I really had fun with the fabric and glue and plan to do more.

Well, friends, thanks for putting up with me. There's so much to do that I'm frustrated at not being able to get even a small portion of it done, feeling pulled in about a thousand directions. Maybe the sun will come out tomorrow and I'll feel cheerier.

As always, Von, I ooh and ahh over your beautiful smocking! And I love the Costco milk box transformation! (I too have plenty of those around the house!) ;)

David and I are trying to buy a house in Simi--close to the kids' school and with 1000 extra sq. feet. Will you please pray that we'll get approved for the loan and that the sellers will accept our offer? Thanks!

Girl, you are SO talented. You never cease to amaze me. Beautiful things just fly off of your fingers in all directions! I know that you'll be feeling like your sunshine-y self in no time. :)

Your smocking is just beautiful. Seems like a lot of people are in a stitching slump right now. It must be the weather or time of year.

Beautiful smocking and that container turned out really well. I'm sure you'll be feeling better once the weather improves and the sun comes out a bit. We had fog for several days just before Christmas and I hated it, so I know exactly where you're coming from on that.

Hello Von! I think a lot of us have had the winter blues (I know I have). Spring will come again ...! Looks like you are doing your part to bring it back soon with your pretty projects. That smocking is so nostalgic for me; what beautiful handwork. And I love your fabric box; bravo!

If you feel like a little diversion, stop by Willling Hands and peek at the 3rd post down, I tagged you for a fun little game.

Hang in there, Von - January is nearly over! :D Your new fabric-covered container is gorgeous ... what a great idea! In fact those fabbies would make a lovely quilt, very scrummy colours! :D

You definitely need to read my latest entry (after the photo). And I didn't visit here first either!
I'm sure something will keep you busy or entertained. Just think, only about 6 more weeks of this gloom!

Von! I am right there with you when it comes to the wintery blahs! I had it bad yesterday, it was dark and gloomy out, one of those days where no matter how many lights you turn on in the house it's never quite bright enough!! Today the sun is shining, but it is still very cold out there! Hang in there!

Von, I know only too well what you mean! I haven't been able to get near my stitching to any real degree for weeks on end now (AND I don't even do the holidays!), plus I'm also feeling completely overwhelmed with stuff to do, so little time and umph and so, plus personal issues just sapping every bit of energy I otherwise would have. Oh yes, do I know what you're feeling!

Sending you supportive wishes,

Elisabeth=)

Von, I'm so sorry you've got the January blahs and blues... I do hope, for your sake that the sun will come out soon!
Love your box. What a great idea!

Hi Von! Your smocked gowns are beautiful! This is the first time I've ever heard of smocking being donated for NICU babies, what a lovely thing for your group to do! My middle son spent 4 months in NICU and he had a knitted cap given to him~I loved it and very much appreciated that little act of kindness from strangers.
Your fabric covered box turned out great, and I think it's really a clever idea. Hope the blahs are subsiding. I'm ready for spring! :)
