Hot and Very Dry

The heat wave is continuing here in the Pacific Northwest, which is especially difficult for my friends on the normally wet side of the Cascade Mountains where air conditioned homes are not the norm as it is here in the desert. Coping with the heat is expected here and with a/c and irrigation water, humans, pets, and plants in the garden get through it.

Imagine my horror then when I read a twitter update from our local newspaper stating that the irrigation district had a big canal leak and Kennewick will lose their irrigation water for anywhere from one week to three weeks! Seeing my lawn brown up is sad, but the thought of hand watering my beloved roses with city water hurts on two levels: 1) time, and 2) $$$. To top it off, we're leaving town on Thursday for the beach and the heat wave continues on through next week. Argh!

Well, I scurried right home and started getting everything watered, while I still had water. Happily, I've had a bit of water all day today as the lines are gradually being emptied, so we're starting out in pretty good shape. Son Geoff will be taking care of things while we're gone. He kept the garden during our SoCal trip, so I have confidence he can handle this. :)

On a happier note, there was a hummingbird loving on my garden phlox yesterday evening. I haven't seen a hummingbird in my garden for years. I actually clapped my hands (quietly) in excitement to see him! Seeing the butterflies, quail families, and now a hummingbird enjoy my garden makes all the hard work worthwhile.

Perhaps I'll get a chance to update this weekend from the beach. We'll see how the internet connection is. Can't wait to cool off!!

I'm so sorry your weather is so icky, but please don't send the dry heat to Colorado. We've been enjoying a cooler, wetter summer for a change.

Hope the beach is gorgeous for you.

It's been as hot at the beach as inland this week. Hope you have air conditioning at Long Beach! 102 yesterday and today...and my lawn in long since dead! Have a good trip...wish we could go too!

Sorry to hear about your weather and water! We've been over 100 degrees for over a month and in a drout for 2 years. We've been on water restrictions since last year and our backyard is straw:(
I hope you have a nice relaxing vacation!!

RATS! What sad news about your garden's water source being dried up for such a long time, Von! Let's pray for rain and lots of it while you're gone. :] I hope you just have a fabulous time while you're at the Beach.
Hugs, Deb
