Rain

Summer has left us. Oh, we'll see the sun again, but it won't have the same warmth and intensity. It'll be an autumny sun, which is really quite lovely. But for today and for the next few days, the clouds have moved in and have brought a nice soaking rain.

Knowing that a change was coming, I had been working a little in the border gardens. The main project was to move the little Japanese maple about six feet to a spot where I think it will be much happier. Each spring its gloriously red leaves emerge and then the sun rises higher and higher in the sky, beating down on poor little maple, burning the leaves - no matter how much water I give it. In it's new corner, the house will provide more protection from the extreme summer sun. Fingers crossed that it adjusts to being moved!

As long as the garden was torn up, I shifted one of my Mexican grass plants and planted six peony roots at various places along the back fence. One day this border will actually be filled with mature plants and myriads of blooms! Fingers crossed again. :)

In puppy news, Fritz slept thru the night last night! He did get quite a workout with the kids yesterday afternoon though, lots of playing outside. Not so much play outside today with the rain, so we'll see how he does tonight. The last two afternoons I've taken him along with me on errands involving shuffling kids around so he could get accustomed to riding in the car. I don't want him to think that every car ride means a new home or a vet visit! Here's Fritz keeping us company during school.

Oh what a lovely companion Fritz makes! When I was eight years old, my school teacher used to take her basset hound to school with her every day. I don't think they would allow it these days, but it was such fun having him around!
Happy autumn to you :o)
