The Twining Thread

Nestled in the Nye Beach area of Newport is this charming needlework shop, The Twining Thread. I was following rabbit trails on the internet one day, found their website and noted the location since we get to the coast every year - it was possible we might get to Newport!

On Tuesday after one lighthouse visit and lunch, we parked the XP just up the hill. I headed for the shop, DH and kids for the beach and environs. Immediately, I knew this was my kind of shop! The owners, Joey and Jim Colbert, have created a beautiful environment for browsing, contemplating, planning, and dreaming of your next needlework project, and the next, and then another. Joey specializes in historic needlework of many kinds, but what impressed me most was the variety of fibers she has in her store. A wall, racks, and drawers full of floss and threads of all sizes. And she has ribbon! YLI and Gloriana silk ribbon for embroidery and racks of wired ribbon for making ribbon flowers.

The shop and inventory are a mere reflection of Joey, who has long had a love of sewing first, then embroidery. We had a wonderful time chatting about the shop, business, and about her upcoming two day class with Tricia Wilson Nguyen. The class is September 9 and 10, so time is short and Joey is feeling anxious over some of the details so that everyone has a great time. I have a feeling that it's going to be a great class - wish I could go!

So, what did I buy?! Well, on my first visit I bought:

R&R French Vanilla 30 ct linen, 17x13.5
36 ct, Creme Brulee linen
2 sets of sewing cards by Tokens and Trifles
Gloriana Princess Perle Petite in Harvest Grape and Winter Brook
and
Gloriana silk ribbon
4mm in Tahoe Blue
7mm in Highland Meadow

Yes, I had to go back! Joey and I had so much fun chatting, that I didn't feel like I'd seen everything. DH indulged me and took the kids down to the harbor so I could shop some more. What a guy!

So I looked through everything. It was really hard to not take it all home with me. Finally, it boiled down to:

2 of those great mesh zippered bags
Hardanger Small Projects by Satin Stitches
Snowflakes by Thistle Threads
Thread and X-Stitch by Carriage House Samplings
Thread Drops thread organizer
some gorgeous double-faced silk satin ribbon
couple other ribbons
two cuts of wired-edge ribbon
stamens

If you are ever in the central Oregon Coast area and need a needlework fix, this is definitely worth the gas and the time! And be sure to visit the website for more inside pictures of the store and browse her newsletter and catalog. I think many of you will really like what you see.

Wow Von, your description of this shop makes me want to go there too! I just love all the goodies you purchased - those fabrics look gorgeous. And welcome to the club of CHS Alphabet Stitchers - I just started stitching these myself! May be we should start a SAL for these.....

Great pieces for your stash. I love the linen on the right side of the first pic, is that french vanilla or creme brulee? Thanks, Ann.
