Rock Hound

Wow, it's been a week since my last post. We've had some pretty nice weather while many of you have been roasting, so I thought I should get busy in my side yard and rose garden. After all, there are those new little rose bushes that need a new home.

From my adventures in excavation last summer, I had a big rock pile against the fence you see in the photo. What to do with those rocks? I started out by digging a path or stream in my rose garden to be filled with some of the smaller rocks in my pile. Then I started going through that pile and sizing the stones, cleaning the smaller ones in the wheelbarrow and dumping them into the streambed. And this is what it looks like now:

There are still some stones I need to size and a little more filling to do in the streambed, but the middle of the bed is ready for roses! Problem is, starting on Friday, we're going to have temperatures between 100-110 for the following five days. Those poor little shrubs would just wither away. So, perhaps a week from now, when it's back down to 95 degrees, I can plant my new roses. The saleslady at the nursery gave me a great tip for shading the new transplants by cutting out the bottom of a paper grocery bag and popping it over the plant during the day. It still gets light, but is protected from most of the harsh midday rays.

I actually have some stitching progress to share, but my camera batteries have to be recharged. So check back later for more!

That's a pretty good 'before' and 'after' shot! Good luck with the roses!

Cathy, the first photo is of my rock pile, what's leftover after making the streambed. I think I have enough to make raised bed planter by the rose garden!

Fabulous and so creative! I can't wait to see it once you're able to plant the new roses. :)

Your garden is going to look so good, I cannot imagine being that hot no wonder you need the aircon :-) You are certainly a very busy lady I'm off to do my housework now and loads of ironing as my children finish school today :-) Look forward to seeing your latest stitching.

Goodness Von! What an accomplishment. I don't know anything about roses; however, cannot wait to see the pictures once you have them planted.

And, you got stitching accomplished during all the gardening & rock moving? I admire you ... I'm such a one-thing-at-a-time person.

We are at the end of the hot/humid stuff & I hear we should have upper 70's/low 80's for a few days. I'm all for that.
