Kitchen Porn

A friend of mine refers to the HGTV channel as house pornography. While I wouldn't use quite those words, I do understand his point. Of course, I watch more than my share of HGTV and DIY, but it's purely for research for the projects we need to do in my modest home. ;-)

However, yesterday I was doing a little reading on the Building a House forum on the Garden Web forums website. You know, just catching up on a forum that really helped me lots when I remodeled my kitchen. I followed one conversation on kitchen lighting (as that's one thing I need to finish), looked at some of the kitchen photos and just about went into delirium over this slab of granite.

Wow! I still can't get over this gorgeous rock. This is kitchen porn for me - I want this on my kitchen island! Don't tell me what it costs, let me keep my fantasy. Someday . . .

Hi Von, nice rock! For some reason, your blog hasn't been refreshing in my blogroll, so I thought maybe you were away! Sorry I hadn't been visiting because of it :-(

I got granite and it 'rocks'!!!
I got a color called 'blue opal' (but it looks closer to black). The dark colors don't show the spots, etc. Some people say they show dust, but I only get dust high up in places I forget about. I'll tell you the price of 3 1/2 countertops if you want. Ouch-but I am so glad we spurgled.

Gorgeous rock! I put quartz in mine. Love it. It's a milk chocolate with black and dark chocolate flecks. Go for the granite if you can, you won't regret it!

I know, just like the guys who read the girlie mags for 'the articles', you watch HGTV for the info... ;o)

Ooooh, I'd trade DH for granite counters in a heartbeat...

We did look into getting granite, and depending on where/how big your island is you may have to get some additional work suring up the floor to support it. We have a 4'X5' island that is pretty much in the center of our kitchen floor. To put that much weight there, we'd have to add support to the floor. I also looked at some less expensive options, like slate, but there's still that little issue of not having an island in our basement!

An alternative we've thought of was doing the granite on the counters and something much lighter (like butcher block) on the island.

You have been busy Von and I love your new garden. Will be nice to get those little roses planted I bet.

And you have made progress on some stitching, always a step in the right direction. Real cute. And thank goodness for swim meets huh!! lol
