Next Gen

My granddaughter, Ilse (8), has been interested in crafting for a long time. She loves to make stuff with paper and uses large quantities of paper, tape, and glue. More recently, she's started experimenting with bits of fabric, needle, and thread to make clothes for her dolls or other little things. Sounds like she might be interested in learning to embroider!

Last week I showed her some of the things I've been working on, then got out the embroidery box I have that belonged to my mother. At some point Mom had ordered some linen napkins and placemats with a design already printed on them, but she never finished all of them. The design is simple, mostly cross stitching and a few lazy daisy stitches and some kind of outline stitch - a great beginner project! Ilse was eager to learn, so we got started this morning.

We both had a napkin to work on so she could watch me stitch the same thing she was stitching. She got her needle threaded quite easily thanks to her previous endeavors, and took right to making the cross stitches! I made up a little embroidery kit for her to take home so she can continue working on the project and next time we'll add to her stitch repertoire!

Happy stitching!

What a beautiful granddaughter you have. Such a sweet photo Von. My grandmothers died when I was very, very young. My Great Aunt inspired and encouraged me to sew. I hope you two have many fun hours together. :D
